More than a few people are said to be upset with the potential release of Walmart’s Juneteenth “celebration edition” ice cream for the upcoming holiday, and calling it racist and exploitative. Blackenterprise.com reports the ice cream is a combination red velvet and cheesecake and the package says “share and celebrate African-American culture, emancipation, and enduring hope.” The carton also pictures a couple of Black hands with a yellow, green, red, and black background.
If you’ve had smallpox, then you’ll probably survive getting Monkeypox, which is typically less severe. It’s a rare disease caused by the monkeypox virus, part of the same family as smallpox and typically found in remote parts of Central and West Africa. More than a hundred cases of the virus - which causes a rash and a fever - have been confirmed in Europe, the Americas and Australia, and apparently obtained during overseas travel. Health officials say it involves skin-to-skin contact, as well as sexual contact.
Congrats to Angela Lansbury, who’s getting a special Tony Award for lifetime achievement this year to put on her shelf along with her five other Tonys. Angela, who’s 96, won her first Tony in 1966 (yes, that would be 56 years ago) when she played the lead character in the Broadway musical, “Mame.” The Tonys will be televised on CBS June 12th and hosted by Ariana DeBose.
Ricky Martin has signed on to star in the upcoming Apple TV+ comedy series “Mrs. American Pie,” co-starring Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, Alison Janney and Leslie Bibb. It’ll be his first major role since starring as Antonio D’Amico in “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” for the American Crime story anthology.
Fast food news: Starbucks has joined McDonalds and will be suspending all business activity and closing all their stores in Russia after 15 years. Starbucks has around 130 stores in Russia, which are owned and operated by a licensed partner. Obviously it’s related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and coincidentally, the Starbucks Foundation also gave a half-million bucks to the Red Cross and the World Central Kitchen to help finance humanitarian efforts in the Ukraine.
