Movie news: Deadline reports MATT DAMON and ROBERT DOWNEY, Jr, are in talks to join the upcoming film, "Oppenheimer," about the nuclear scientist that ran the Manhattan Project which led to the invention of the atomic bomb. Actress EMILY BLUNT was also reportedly in talks to join the film as well. Interestingly, the film will debut in July of 2023, just a couple of weeks before the anniversary of the US dropping the first nuclear bomb on Hiroshima, Japan.
Whoops: Speaking of the United States nuclear agenda, it turns out that a U.S. Navy nuclear sub --the USS Connecticut-- apparently struck an uncharted underwater mountain in the South China Sea last month. The Navy says two crewmen were injured and several others got "minor bumps and bruises" in the accident, and the crash also damaged the sub's forward ballast tanks enough to force it to sail on the surface for a week back to Guam for repairs. Fortunately, the nuclear power plant of the sub was not damaged.
Tube talk: Good news for fans of ED SHEERAN. Variety reports he'll be the musical guest on this weekend's edition of "Saturday Night Live." He was supposed to be on the show a couple of weeks ago to plug his new album, but tested positive for COVID-19. Now, he's reportedly finished his stint in quarantine and will be showcasing his album, called “=,” or "Equals." The show will be hosted by “Succession” star KIERAN CULKIN.
Tube talk #2: CARDI B, who's won five American Music Awards, will be hosting this year's show coming up on ABC on November 21st. Cardi B performed "I Like It" at the AMAs in 2018 with J BALVIN and BAD BUNNY and is the first female rapper to win "Favorite Hip-Hop Song" twice. TAYLOR SWIFT, who's already the most awarded artist in AMA history, is nominated for three awards total, and could extend her win streak.
Drugs: A new report from the Feds says they've managed to confiscate double the amount of fentanyl at the southern border in the past year --11,201 pounds of the stuff. And since a kilogram of fentanyl is equivalent to 500,000 lethal doses, that means the Feds have prevented 2.5 billion doses from entering the country. FYI: fentanyl is 100 times stronger than morphine and more than 96,000 people died from drug overdoses last year.
Games: The folks at Netflix are letting you download games on their app --but only for Android smartphones at this point. The games are "Stranger Things: 1984," "Stranger Things 3: The Game," "Card Blast," "Teeter Up," and "Shooting Hoops." Netflix says they'll b e rolling out games for Apple (iOS) phones "in the coming months" as well. The good thing about the games is that there are no ads and no in-app payments included in the games like those in other mobile games.
Fast food: Sonic is bringing its Garlic Butter Bacon Burger back for a couple of months (thru December 26th). The burger is topped with creamy garlic butter and layered between two slices of American cheese, crispy bacon, mayo, and grilled onions on a toasted bakery bun. 980 calories; 1860 mg of sodium. You're welcome.
