The big show-biz story yesterday has got to be the news that this coming third season of “Star Trek: Discovery,” will feature characters who are gender non-binary and transgender. They include:
- IAN ALEXANDER, who will play a trans man who has spent his life as a Trill, planning to be a host for a symbiotic alien species that lives in different hosts over its lifetime. Ian also played a trans character on the Netflix sci-fi series “The OA.”
- BLU del BARRIO will play Adira, a non-binary character who bonds with Lt. Commander Paul Stamets (played by ANTHONY RAPP) and Dr. Hugh Culber (played by WILSON CRUZ), making them the first same-sex couple in “Trek” TV series history.
The third season of “Star Trek: Discovery” premieres on CBS All Access on October 15.
Meanwhile, the British show, "Strictly Come Dancing," will have a same sex couple this season --Ex-boxer NICOLA ADAMS (who won a gold medal for Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics, and again in Rio in 2016) will have a same-sex dance partner on the show, but she hasn't been announced yet.
Like you really care: Time magazine's annual list of the 100 most influential people is being made into an ABC TV special. It'll be on September 22, the same day that that the full list will be released on Time.com.
J.J. ABRAMS has put together a Netflix docuseries about the 1986 NASA mission of the Space Shuttle Challenger, which ended just 73 seconds after takeoff. “Challenger: The Final Flight” is a four-part series, which will also have interviews with the crew members’ families, and scheduled to premiere on September 16.
Look for Fox News’ CHRIS WALLACE, NBC News’ KRISTEN WELKER and C-Span’s STEVE SCULLY to each moderate one of the three Presidential Debates --each 90 minutes long-- before the elections this fall. There will also be a separate vice-presidential debate moderated by SUSAN PAGE of USA Today as well.
Other show biz stuff: MARIAH CAREY says her fling with DEREK JETER started while she was married to TOMMY MOTTOLA.
Kind of odd: Dairy Queen has put together a new line of "Blizzard-Scented Candles" --six, four-ounce candles in scents including:
- Caramel Apple Pie
- Pumpkin Pie
- Oreo Mocha Fudge
- Snickerdoodle Cookie Dough
- Brownie Dough
- Choco Dipped Strawberry.
Get 'em online at DQCandleCollection.com starting today at 3:00 pm (Eastern). They'll set ya back $25 a set, but it's for a good cause --the money goes to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
