Congratulations and happy birthday to Merah (MEER'-ah), the Sumatran orangutan at the St. Louis Zoo, who turned 50 years old on Monday --the day after Mother's Day. And speaking of mothers, Merah has had five children, two grandchildran and even a great-grandchild. Her oldest child, Ginger, was born in 2014 when she was 45!
The Zoo says fewer than 125,000 orangutans remain in the wild due to habitat loss. While we're on the science front, congratulations to VICTOR VESCOVO, who now owns the record for the deepest ocean dive ever. Vic took a submersible vehicle down to 35,849 feet in the Pacific Ocean's Mariana Trench, spending around four hours down there and finding a plastic bag and candy wrappers.
As you might have guessed, that's kind of sad, although he also spotted four new species of prawn-like crustaceans called amphipods, a creature called a spoon worm and a pink snailfish around the 26,000 foot mark. It's only the third time that humans have gone down to the bottom of the Mariana Trench --the first time in 1960 when US Navy lieutenant Don Walsh and Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard took a bathyscaphe named the Trieste down, and the second when movie director James Cameron made a solo trip in 2012 in his sub marine.Thinking about buying Uber stock after its IPO Friday? So far, it's high was at 44.74 on Friday, and it was at 36.36 Monday. You might think that the past couple of day's 600-plus drops had something to do with it because China decided to raise tariffs on some U.S. goods in the ongoing trade war. But Lyft opened for trading near $88 in late March and is now down $48 a share.
