Five fun facts about turkeys (source: LiveScience.com):
1. Wild turkeys can fly --with speeds topping out at 55 miles per hour. Domestic turkeys are so heavy that they can't fly, because they're bred to be delicious.
2. Wild turkeys can climb tree. That's where they like to sleep.
3. Male turkey heads change color when it is breeding time. When the males are feeling frisky, their heads can change from red to white to blue (How appropriate!) The rest of the males' bodies are usually green, bronze, gold and red. Hens' bodies are usually brown or gray.
4. Turkeys eat stones because it helps them digest food.
5. Only males gobble. Female turkeys also make distinct noises, but they sound more like chirps and clucks. (Bartha)Quick turkey trivia:
Who once tossed a hissy-fit when they found a turkey roll on their backstage buffet? Your choices: Cream, Led Zep, Aerosmith or ZZ Top. Answer: Aerosmith. Steven Tyler claimed that he'd explicitly forbidden turkey roll.
On the Beat:
Texas police have arrested the COOKIE MONSTER.
Cops in Houston gave 24-year-old EUGENE BRADSHAW the Muppet-inspired nickname after he allegedly robbed over thirty fast-food restaurants, taking cash and usually demanding cookies on his way out. Bradshaw and his accused 34-year-old accomplice KRISTY GEORGE were arrested last Thursday after deputies with the Harris County Sheriff's Office managed to identify them using surveillance video.
Editor's note: To catch him, they put a cookie in a cage and propped the latch up with a stick. (Still)Crooks too stupid to live:
In a scene straight out of "Crocodile Dundee," the bigger knife usually wins the fight. A man in Worcester (pronounced. Woos-ter), Massachusetts, tried to rob a liquor store, or a package store as they are called in the Northeast, with a machete. LUIS JIMENEZ, who's 38, walked into Belmont Liquors and pulled out a giant knife with the intent to rob the store. The clerk, instead of emptying the register like he was asked, pulled out a bigger machete and Jimenez ran away. He was later arrested on attempted robbery and drug possession charges. (Myers)
Stars and their movies:
Looks like the latest "Star Wars" film, "The Force Awakens," could be the biggest-selling movie of the franchise, since Fandango is currently reporting more than $50 million dollars of advance sales for the first weekend, and a number of cinemas have announced they will stay open round the clock during the movie's first week.
Variety reports the advance sales makes it the biggest pre-seller in Fandango's history and that movie chains continually adding extra show times to keep up with demand.
So far, the record-holder for the first weekend of a movie was set by the $209-million dollar opening weekend of "Jurassic World" this past June.Hoops:
Last night, the Golden State Warriors tied the NBA record for most consecutive wins to begin a season (15) by beating the Denver Nuggets, 118-105. On the flip side, the Philadelphia 76ers are a league worst at 0-14. They have lost 24 games in a row dating back to last March 25. They're two losses away from tying the longest losing streak in NBA history with 26... set two seasons ago by the same Philadelphia 76ers. (Lane)
