Filling a need:
Still stuck on a gift for a new grad or a belated Father's Day gift? Try bacon.
Oscar Meyer is now offering (for a limited time only!) gift packages filled with bacon. They've got three different sets to choose from, although all three contain eighteen to twenty strips of Oscar Meyer Original bacon. The "Commander" gift set includes a stainless steel money clip engraved with the words "Bringin' it Home" and an image of a bacon strip. The "Matador" includes bacon strip cufflinks. Finally, the "Woodsman" includes a twelve-function multi-tool with a bacon strip carved into the handle.
The packages cost between twenty-two to twenty-eight dollars and can be purchased until July 1st, 2013 at SayItWithBacon.com. (AB)On, off and way-off Broadway:
The NEIL PATRICK HARRIS juggernaut continues. Neil, who just wrapped up his gig hosting the Tony Awards and is scheduled to host the Emmys in September, has just signed to return to Broadway next spring as the lead in the rock musical, "Hedwig and Angry Inch."
The show is about a rock band fronted by a transgender singer (played, of course, by Neil).
Neil is no stranger to Broadway, appearing in the 2004 revival of "Assassins," and also in "Cabaret" and "Proof" before "How I Met Your Mother."The Supremes:
The Supreme Court court ruled 5-4 yesterday that if suspects refuse to talk to police before they're read their Miranda rights, prosecutors can use that silence against them in court.
Basically, if you're ever in any trouble with police and want to keep your mouth shut, you will need to announce that you're invoking your Fifth Amendment right instead of, you know, just keeping your mouth shut.
The interesting wrinkle here is the the potential precedent effect on a case like that of the younger Boston Marathon suspect, DZHOKHAR TSARNAEV, who reportedly sat through 16 hours of questioning before he was read his Miranda rights. Had Tsarnaev, who was recovering from serious injuries at the time, remained silent during questioning without explicitly invoking his Fifth Amendment, prosecutors could, under this ruling, now use that silence to their advantage.
More decisions will be announced Thursday. Still to come: the Court's Big Four cases this term: voting rights, affirmative action, DOMA, and Proposition 8. (Maiman)Making a comeback:
DAVE CHAPPELLE is returning to the world of stand-up.
Eight years after he abruptly left his popular sketch gig on Comedy Central, Chappelle returns to the spotlight in the Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival tour this summer with Flight of the Conchords, among other big names.
Rumors of Chappelle's comeback have been making the rounds ever since he performed with CHRIS ROCK and others at The Comedy Cellar in New York this past winter.
The month-long tour kicks off in Austin, TX, on August 23 and will feature "two stages, street performers, vendors, psychics, freaks, tasty treats, and more."
Tickets go on sale June 21. (Maiman)Food and Nutrition:
Mom told you breakfast was the most important meal of the day. She wasn't kidding! New research suggests that skipping the first meal could fuel insulin resistance.
An abstract presented at a conference of the Endocrine Society reveals that women who missed breakfast showed greater spikes in insulin and glucose levels after lunch. Not eating breakfast was also associated with significantly higher levels of free fatty acids before lunch because lipolysis was occurring.
Researchers say that skipping breakfast over time could lead to insulin resistance that could progress to type 2 diabetes. (Page) -
