CCM Coaching Tip #111: You have to OVERCOME being a Christian to do good Ministry on the Air

Part of the DNA of any Contemporary Christian Music station is offering faith-based thoughts on the air. But we have to be careful to avoid “preaching to only the first row of the choir.”
You have to OVERCOME being a Christian to do good ministry-based breaks, because not everyone who tunes in – especially if it’s for the first time – is as deep in their faith as the people around you in the hallways of a CCM station, or as our most devoted listeners. And think about this: if we’re not welcoming in the person who may be taking his or her first step toward Christ, we’re not being good shepherds.
Just because you’re a Christian does NOT mean that you’ll automatically be good at sharing your faith, or even doing the “Positive Word of the Day” type of thing. Ministry-based breaks have to be crafted MORE carefully than “regular” Content. And they have to be delivered as naturally as sharing a thought with a friend. You shouldn’t want it to sound “presentational” at all.
Faith-based Content can either be an added strength that our stations have that other stations can’t offer, or it can just lie there flat. Let’s not live up to what the average person’s worst expectations of what our format will sound like.
